Vera was a former governess who came to Indian Island to be the secratary for Mrs. Owens.

She is responisble for the death of a young boy so that her lover, Hugo, would inherit the boy's wealth and estate. Vera is a very intelligent character, but also has frequent bouts of hysteria.
